Backflow Prevention

Prerequisite:
A minimum of five (5) years of documented practical experience in the installation or service of plumbing, mechanical, fire protection, lawn irrigation or a related industry field.
Description:
This 48-hour training program provides participants with the knowledge and skills required to properly test backflow prevention assemblies in accordance with industry standards and accepted practices. Participants will gain a thorough understanding of cross-connection control principles, along with the devices and methods used to prevent the backflow of contaminants into potable water systems.

By the end of the course, participants will be well-prepared to sit for the American Society of Sanitary Engineering (ASSE) Certification Examination. The certification exam, administered on the final day of training, includes both a written and hands-on component. The written exam consists of 100 questions, while the practical exam requires candidates seeking initial tester certification to demonstrate field test procedures—without notes or assistance—for the following:
  • Reduced Pressure Principle Assembly (RP)
  • Double Check Valve Assembly (DC)
  • Pressure Vacuum Breaker Assembly (PVB)
  • Spill-Resistant Vacuum Breaker (SVB)
Successful completion of this course equips participants with the knowledge, practical skills, and confidence necessary to achieve ASSE certification as a backflow prevention assembly tester.

JUT Credit Eligibility

This class is eligible for up to 32 JUT hours.

JUT hours applied depend on the member’s current JUT status and hours.

  • Up to 16 hours apply to the current JUT year
  • Up to 16 additional hours may apply to the next JUT year if rollover eligibility is met

This is a certification course. Members who complete the class but do not pass the certification exam will receive up to 8 of the 16 approved JUT hours for the current JUT year.

Members may roll over up to 16 hours if they are complete with the 2024/2025 JUT year and the class was taken on or after September 1, 2025.
