Backflow Prevention

Prerequisite:
A minimum of five (5) years of documented practical experience in the installation or service of plumbing, mechanical, fire protection, lawn irrigation or a related industry field.
Description:
This 48-hour training program provides participants with the knowledge and skills required to properly test backflow prevention assemblies in accordance with industry standards and accepted practices. Participants will gain a thorough understanding of cross-connection control principles, along with the devices and methods used to prevent the backflow of contaminants into potable water systems.

By the end of the course, participants will be well-prepared to sit for the American Society of Sanitary Engineering (ASSE) Certification Examination. The certification exam, administered on the final day of training, includes both a written and hands-on component. The written exam consists of 100 questions, while the practical exam requires candidates seeking initial tester certification to demonstrate field test procedures—without notes or assistance—for the following:
  • Reduced Pressure Principle Assembly (RP)
  • Double Check Valve Assembly (DC)
  • Pressure Vacuum Breaker Assembly (PVB)
  • Spill-Resistant Vacuum Breaker (SVB)
Successful completion of this course equips participants with the knowledge, practical skills, and confidence necessary to achieve ASSE certification as a backflow prevention assembly tester.

Backflow Recert

Prerequisite:

Description:
This course provides renewal training for Backflow Testers, Surveyors, and Repairers. It also allows those holding a current LA County, ABPA, or AWWA CA/NV certification to convert it into a state-recognized ASSE 5110 Tester Certification.

Participants will review proper testing practices for backflow prevention assemblies and prepare for the ASSE Recertification Exam, which is administered at the end of class. The exam includes a 50-question written test and a hands-on demonstration of field test procedures for RP, DC, PVB, and SVB assemblies.

Successful completion is required to maintain or convert your certification under ASSE guidelines.

Introduction to Backflow Awareness is a non-certification class.

This 8-hour Introduction to Backflow Awareness course delivers foundational knowledge on cross-connection hazards and the vital role of backflow prevention in protecting public health. Participants will explore the history, purpose, and real-world applications of common backflow prevention assemblies, including key differences between backpressure and backsiphonage. The course also introduces essential pressure concepts, water column principles, and basic PSI and feet-of-head conversions used in the field.
